Choosing the Right Oil

Preparing the Wood

Before applying oil, ensure that your wood carving is fully carved and all rough cuts have been smoothed out. This includes sanding the entire piece to remove any scratches or marks from the carving process.

Applying the Oil

Here are the steps to apply the oil:

Step 1: Clean the Carving

Make sure the carving is free from any dust or debris that may have accumulated during the carving process.

Step 2: Apply the Oil

Dip the carving into the tung oil, ensuring it is fully coated. Alternatively, you can use a cloth to apply the oil evenly across the surface of the carving.

Step 3: Wipe Off Excess

Use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess oil from the surface. This helps prevent the oil from pooling in certain areas.

Step 4: Allow to Dry

Let the carving dry overnight. This allows the oil to penetrate the wood properly.

Step 5: Second Coat

For added protection and a richer finish, you can apply a second coat of oil after the first coat has dried. Follow the same process as before and let it dry overnight again.

Additional Tips

Wood Grain Consideration

Ensure that the wood grain is considered when applying the oil. Wood with exposed end grain may dry faster and could affect the evenness of the finish.

Tool Maintenance

While not directly related to the oil, maintaining sharp tools is crucial for smooth cuts and to avoid damaging the wood, which in turn affects the final finish.

In the case of whittling a caricature pig, after all the carving steps are completed, including defining the legs, carving the curly tail, and finishing the ears and feet, the final step involves applying the tung oil.
