The objective of the wood oil project is to protect, enhance, and maintain the quality of wooden surfaces using eco-friendly and effective wood finishes, with a primary focus on tung oil.

Tung Oil: Key Characteristics and Uses

Why Use Tung Oil?

• Tung oil is highly regarded for its performance in eco- and health-friendly finishing. It outperforms many synthetic finishes due to its unique fatty acid composition, particularly its high content of alpha-eleostearic acid.

Properties

• Waterproofing: Tung oil forms an irreversible, cross-linked solid that prevents water molecules from penetrating the wood surface, making it ideal for waterproofing boat hulls, outdoor furniture, and woodenware.
• Non-Discoloring: Unlike other oils, tung oil does not mold, turn amber, or go rancid over time, preserving the natural character of the wood.
• Non-Allergenic: Tung oil is safe and non-allergenic, making it suitable for use on items that come into contact with food.

Application

• Surface Preparation: Good surface prep is crucial as tung oil highlights rather than hides imperfections.
• Thin Coats: Apply tung oil thinly, without thinning it with solvents. It cures through heat, UV light, and oxygen.
• Curing Conditions: Optimal curing conditions include temperatures between 50–75°C, low humidity, and UV light. This can reduce curing time to as little as five or six hours.
