Project Overview

  • The Yakaar-Teranga Gas Project is part of the Yakaar-Teranga complex and is currently in the development phase.

Location

  • The project is situated in the ultra-deepwater Cayar Offshore Profond block, offshore Senegal, with approximate coordinates of 15.221, -18.073. The water depth in this area is around 8,364 feet for Phase 1 and approximately 9,843 feet for Phase 2.

Ownership and Operation

  • Following BP's withdrawal in 2023 due to disagreements with the Senegalese government over the intended use of the gas, Kosmos Energy Ltd. now operates the project with a 90% stake. Société des Pétroles du Sénégal (Petrosen), the state-run oil company of Senegal, holds the remaining 10%.

Discovery and Development Timeline

  • The Yakaar-Teranga field was discovered in 2016.
  • The final investment decision (FID) is expected to be made in 2024.
  • Commercial production is anticipated to start in 2026 for Phase 1.

Reserves and Production

  • The field holds significant gas reserves, estimated at over 25 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas.
  • The remaining recoverable reserves are approximately 77.561 billion cubic meters (million m³) as of 2022.
  • Initial production is expected to be around 150 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) in the first phase, with a design capacity of 5,167.78 million cubic meters per year (million m³/y) by 2033.

Production Phases

  • Phase 1: Expected to start commercial production in 2026 and peak in 2029. Production is forecast to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2055.
  • Phase 2: Currently in the feasibility stage, with commercial production expected to begin in 2030 and peak in 2032. Production is forecast to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2071.

Use of Gas

  • The project aims to meet local gas needs for electricity generation as part of Senegal's 'Gas-To-Power' and 'Gas-To-Industry' initiatives under the country's strategic development plan, 'Plan Sénégal Emergent'.
  • In addition to domestic use, the project also plans to export LNG to global markets, establishing Senegal as a significant energy supplier.

Development Plans

  • The project is in the optimization phase, followed by front-end engineering and design (FEED). Kosmos Energy and Petrosen are working together to ensure the project aligns with Senegal's development plans, including knowledge and skills transfer and economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Challenges and Previous Partnerships

  • BP Plc was previously involved in the project but withdrew in 2023 due to disagreements with the Senegalese government over the intended use of the gas. BP had aimed to export the gas, while the government insisted on using it domestically.
