The International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) wrapped up its session, making headway on the practical implementation of the revised GHG Strategy. Discussions focused on key mid-term measures, including global fuel standards and potential carbon pricing mechanisms.

Delegates advanced discussions on a basket of mid-term measures, including a potential global fuel standard regulating the greenhouse gas intensity of marine fuels and an economic measure, such as a GHG levy or an emissions trading system. While final decisions on specific mechanisms are still pending, member states outlined clear pathways for intersessional work. The aim is to formally adopt these instruments by 2027 to ensure the shipping industry can meet its ambitious decarbonization targets set for 2030 and beyond.
