During its latest session, the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) approved significantly stricter greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets for international shipping. The new framework mandates a 30% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 (from 2008 levels), and a 70% reduction by 2040, moving closer to the goal of net-zero emissions by around 2050.
This accelerated timeline puts increased pressure on shipowners and operators to invest in alternative fuels, energy-efficient technologies, and operational improvements. The IMO is also expected to finalize a basket of technical and economic measures, including a potential global fuel standard and a GHG levy, to support the implementation of these targets.
Industry stakeholders have largely welcomed the clarity provided by the new targets, while also emphasizing the immense challenge of achieving them. Collaboration between regulators, shipyards, fuel suppliers, and technology providers will be crucial to developing scalable and commercially viable solutions within the ambitious timeframe.
