The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced a slight increase in the maximum authorized draft for Neopanamax vessels transiting the expanded locks. This adjustment comes as water levels show marginal improvement following recent rainfall.

Effective May 31, 2026, the maximum authorized draft for vessels using the Neopanamax locks will be incrementally increased by six inches, reaching 45.5 feet (13.87 meters) Tropical Fresh Water (TFW). This minor adjustment offers some relief to carriers who have faced significant draft restrictions and transit limitations due to prolonged drought conditions over the past year. While a positive development, the Canal remains under stringent water management protocols.

The ACP indicated that daily transit slots will remain largely consistent, with the draft increase primarily benefiting larger container ships and LNG carriers by allowing them to load marginally more cargo. The Authority continues to monitor hydrological conditions closely and emphasizes that further adjustments will be made based on rainfall patterns and reservoir levels. Shippers are advised to consult the latest advisories for accurate planning.
