Vessel Description

Finlaggan is a Ro-Ro passenger ferry operating under the flag of the United Kingdom and managed by Caledonian MacBrayne, the primary ferry operator serving Scottish island communities. Originally built in 2011 at the STX Finland shipyard in Rauma, the vessel was constructed for Stena Line operations before being chartered to CalMac for Hebridean service.

The vessel is named after Loch Finlaggan on Islay, historically significant as the seat of the Lords of the Isles. She is one of the larger vessels in the CalMac fleet and plays a critical role in providing passenger and freight connectivity to the island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland.

Finlaggan features a diesel-electric propulsion arrangement utilising Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines, giving the vessel operational flexibility and improved environmental performance. Her capacity accommodates a substantial number of passengers along with vehicle and freight deck space, supporting both tourism and essential supply logistics for island communities. The vessel operates under the oversight of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency and complies with SOLAS and relevant IMO conventions governing passenger vessel safety.
