Vessel Description
L.É. Samuel Beckett is an Irish Naval Service offshore patrol vessel and is the fourth and final vessel of the Samuel Beckett class, which also includes L.É. James Joyce, L.É. William Butler Yeats, and L.É. George Bernard Shaw. Built by Babcock Marine at the Appledore Shipyard in Devon, England, the vessel was commissioned into the Irish Naval Service in 2014. She is named after the renowned Irish playwright and Nobel laureate Samuel Beckett.
The vessel is designed for a wide range of maritime roles including fishery protection, search and rescue operations, maritime security patrols, and law enforcement within Irish waters and the broader North Atlantic region. She is equipped with a flight deck capable of operating medium-sized helicopters, supporting both naval and civilian rescue operations.
L.É. Samuel Beckett has been notably deployed on humanitarian operations in the Mediterranean Sea, participating in migrant rescue missions as part of broader European efforts. Her design incorporates a modern, versatile hull suited for extended blue-water operations, with crew accommodations and support systems appropriate for long-duration deployments. The vessel represents a significant element of Ireland's naval capability for sovereign maritime patrol and international humanitarian commitments.
