Vessel Description

The Santa Maria Manuela is a Portuguese four-masted topsail schooner built in 1937 at the Rickmers Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany. Originally constructed for the Portuguese cod fishing industry, she operated on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland during Portugal's traditional white fleet dory fishing era. She is one of the last surviving examples of this class of vessel and is considered a significant piece of Portuguese maritime heritage.

Following an extensive restoration completed around 2010, the vessel was returned to operational condition and is now used as a sail training ship and ambassador of Portuguese maritime culture. She regularly participates in international tall ship events and regattas, including the Tall Ships Races, and serves as a floating museum and educational platform representing Portugal's historic connection to the sea and the era of the bacalhoeiros — the Portuguese cod fishermen.
