Vessel Description

Kronprins Haakon is Norway's national icebreaker and polar research vessel, operated by the Norwegian Polar Institute. Built to Polar Class 2 (PC-2) standards, she is among the most capable research icebreakers in the world, designed to conduct scientific operations in the harshest polar environments. The vessel supports a wide range of disciplines including oceanography, marine biology, geology, and climate research. She is equipped with laboratories, extensive scientific winch systems, underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and advanced hydrographic survey equipment. Her diesel-electric propulsion system with azimuth thrusters provides excellent maneuverability in ice-covered waters. Named after the Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon, the vessel represents a significant national investment in polar science and sovereignty, supporting Norway's long-term commitments to both Arctic and Antarctic research programs.
