Originally constructed as part of the Renaissance Cruises fleet and designated as R5, the vessel was launched by Fincantieri in 1998 as one of eight near-sister ships in the R-class series. Following the collapse of Renaissance Cruises in 2001, the vessel was subsequently acquired and refurbished for Oceania Cruises, entering service under the Oceania brand.

The ship underwent a significant multi-million dollar refurbishment that upgraded passenger accommodations, dining venues, and public spaces to align with Oceania's premium cruise positioning.
