Vessel Description

CCGS Martha L Black is a Canadian Coast Guard medium icebreaker and multi-mission vessel operating primarily on Canada's Pacific Coast. Named after Martha Louise Black, a prominent Yukon pioneer and Member of Parliament, the vessel serves as one of the Canadian Coast Guard's key assets on the West Coast.

The vessel performs a wide range of Canadian Coast Guard mandated missions including:

  • Icebreaking Operations in Canadian Arctic and Pacific coastal waters
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) support
  • Aids to Navigation servicing and maintenance
  • Scientific Research support in cooperation with DFO
  • Environmental Response operations
  • Resupply Missions to remote Canadian coastal communities

Built in 1986 at Versatile Pacific Shipyards in Victoria, BC, the CCGS Martha L Black has served the Canadian Coast Guard for decades as a reliable multi-role platform. Her diesel-electric propulsion system and twin-screw configuration provide the maneuverability and power required for icebreaking and precise navigation in challenging coastal and ice-covered environments. The vessel represents an important component of Canada's Pacific fleet capability under the operational authority of the Canadian Coast Guard.
