Vessel Description
ARC Independence is a Jumbo Mark II class ferry operating within the Washington State Ferries fleet, one of the largest ferry systems in the United States. Built in 2005 at Marinette, Wisconsin, the vessel was designed specifically for the demanding operational requirements of Puget Sound, offering passenger and vehicle transport services. The vessel features a double-ended ferry configuration, allowing it to operate in both directions without turning, a common design feature for efficient terminal operations. It is capable of carrying several hundred passengers along with a significant number of vehicles per sailing. The diesel-electric propulsion system with azimuth thrusters provides enhanced maneuverability in the congested and tidally complex waters of Puget Sound.
