Vessel Description
The Kennicott is a large mainline ferry operated by the Alaska Marine Highway System, a state-owned ferry network serving coastal communities throughout Alaska. Built in 1998 by Halter Marine in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the vessel is one of the largest in the AMHS fleet and serves as a critical transportation link for communities that are otherwise inaccessible by road. The vessel accommodates passengers, private vehicles, and commercial freight, offering staterooms, cabins, a solarium, dining facilities, and public lounges. The Kennicott is particularly significant in providing the cross-Gulf of Alaska run, connecting Southcentral Alaska communities with the Southeast Alaska ferry network and the connecting route to Bellingham, Washington. The vessel is named after the historic Kennicott Glacier and the Kennicott copper mining district in the Wrangell-St. Elias region of Alaska.
