Vessel Description

USNS Dahl (T-AKR-312) is a Large, Medium-Speed, Roll-On/Roll-Off (LMSR) vessel operated by the Military Sealift Command under the United States Navy's Prepositioning Program. She is one of the Bob Hope-class or Shughart-class LMSR ships designed to rapidly transport heavy military equipment, vehicles, and Army or Marine Corps combat cargo to global locations in support of contingency operations.

The vessel is civilian-crewed by contracted mariners under MSC oversight, with a small military detachment aboard for coordination purposes. LMSR vessels of this class are central to the United States military's strategic sealift capability, capable of loading and discharging vehicles and equipment via a large vehicle ramp system and extensive internal cargo decks without requiring specialized port infrastructure. USNS Dahl is named in honor of US Army Staff Sergeant Larry G. Dahl, a Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War.
