Vessel Description

OYANG 88 was a South Korean-flagged stern trawler operated by Sajo Oyang Corporation, engaged in deep-sea fishing operations primarily in the South Pacific Ocean. The vessel operated under a New Zealand foreign charter fishing license and conducted squid and fish trawling operations in the South Pacific. The vessel gained significant notoriety when it sank on 18 June 2010 in the Southern Ocean approximately 130 nautical miles southwest of the Snares Islands, New Zealand. The sinking resulted in the loss of 42 crew members out of a complement of 67. The vessel was operating in rough sea conditions at the time of the incident. The disaster prompted significant investigations by New Zealand Maritime Authority into the safety standards and working conditions aboard foreign charter fishing vessels operating within New Zealand waters, ultimately contributing to legislative reform of New Zealand's foreign charter fishing regulations.
