Gode Wind 3 Offshore Wind Farm Profile

Location

The Gode Wind 3 offshore wind farm is located in the German North Sea, approximately 32 kilometers off the island of Norderney, within Germany's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Developers and Owners

The wind farm is developed by Ørsted, a Danish energy company. In October 2023, Ørsted completed the divestment of 50% of the Gode Wind 3 project to funds managed by Glennmont Partners from Nuveen Infrastructure.

Capacity and Turbines

• The Gode Wind 3 wind farm has a total capacity of 253 MW.
• It will be equipped with 23 Siemens Gamesa SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbines, each with a nominal output of 11 MW and a rotor diameter of 200 meters. The turbines feature 97m-long B97 IntegralBlade rotor blades and are based on Siemens Gamesa’s direct drive technology.

Construction and Installation

• The first turbine was installed in April 2024 using Cadeler’s newly upgraded jack-up vessel, Wind Osprey. Additional turbines will be installed and commissioned in the coming weeks.
• Jan De Nul Group is contracted to transport and install the monopile foundations and the offshore substation topside, utilizing their next-generation offshore installation vessel, Les Alizes.
• Seaway7 is also involved in the installation process with their installation vessel Seaway Ventus.

Power Transmission

• The power generated is sent to a 242MW offshore substation through dedicated underwater cables.
• The substation, installed in September 2023, functions as a remote control and monitoring station for the wind farm.
• The power is transmitted to the DolWin kappa offshore converter platform via an AC subsea cable and then connected to TenneT’s extra-high-voltage grid through the DolWin Kappa high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station. The power is ultimately delivered to the onshore grid connection in Emden/East (Lower Saxony), Germany.

Milestones and Operations

• The project was initially proposed as two separate projects of 110MW and 132MW, awarded to Ørsted in 2017 and 2018, respectively. These projects were merged in September 2019 into a single 253MW project.
• The final investment decisions (FID) for the project were made in December 2021.
• The first monopile foundation was installed in August 2023.
• The wind farm started producing electricity and delivering it to the transmission grid in May 2024.

• The Gode Wind 3 project is part of Ørsted’s commitment to the German Energiewende (energy transition) and supports the country’s goals for renewable energy.
• The project marks a significant milestone in the German offshore wind industry, introducing the next generation of offshore wind turbines that are more efficient and produce larger volumes of green electricity.

Contractors and Suppliers

• Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) is the preferred turbine supplier and has a service and maintenance agreement for five years.
• Jan De Nul Group and Seaway7 are involved in the installation of the monopile foundations and the offshore substation.
