Greater Changhua 2a
- Type: Wind Farm
- Latitude: 24.1750000
- Longitude: 119.8330000
General Information
- Wind Farm Name: Greater Changhua 2a - South West, also known as Greater Changhua 2a or part of the Greater Changhua Southwest wind farm.
- Location: Off the coast of Changhua County, Taiwan, specifically in Fangyuan Town. The wind farm is situated 35-50 km off the shore.
- Coordinates: Approximately 24.1517932, 119.9938409 (WGS 84).
Ownership and Operation
- Owner: Ørsted A/S, with 100% ownership of the Greater Changhua 2a wind farm.
Capacity and Turbines
- Total Nominal Power: 294.8 MW.
- Number of Turbines: 36 turbines.
- Turbine Model: Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines, designed to withstand typhoons, seismic activities, and extreme temperatures. Each turbine has a rotor diameter of 167 meters and uses 81.4-meter-long blades.
Commissioning and Status
- Commissioning Year: The wind farm was fully operational by April 2024.
- Status: In operation.
Technical Details
- Water Depth: The turbines are installed at a water depth of approximately 30-35 meters.
- Foundation and Cables: The wind farm uses offshore hard mount foundations. The cable-laying involved 111 interarray cables and three export cables, which were protected by NjordGuard cable protection systems and bellmouths. The cables were buried to the required depth by Van Oord’s Dig-It trencher.
- Transmission: The wind farm includes two offshore high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) transformer platforms and two onshore HVAC substations. The transmission lines include 55km-long, 230kV export cables and 4.35km-long, 161kV export cables connecting to the Taiwan Power Company-operated Chang One A substation.
Construction and Development
- Construction Timeline: Onshore construction began in November 2019, and offshore construction started in March 2021. The initial phase involved horizontal directional drilling to prepare the site for cable installation and foundation setting. The wind farm began generating power by April 2022 and was fully inaugurated by April 2024.
Impact and Significance
- Energy Contribution: The Greater Changhua 1 and 2a wind farms collectively doubled Taiwan’s offshore wind power generation capabilities and are part of Taiwan’s largest wind power complex, capable of powering approximately 2.8 million Taiwanese households.
- Regional Significance: These wind farms are Taiwan’s first utility-scale far-shore wind farms and the largest of their kind in the Asia-Pacific region.
