Nordsee Ost

  • Type: Wind Farm
  • Latitude: 54.4450000
  • Longitude: 7.6820000

Location

The Nordsee-Ost offshore wind farm is located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) north-east of Helgoland, a German archipelago in the North Sea.

Capacity and Turbines

The wind farm has a total installed capacity of 295 MW, generated by 48 wind turbines. Each turbine has a capacity of 6.15 MW, supplied by REpower.

Construction and Operation

Construction on the project began in the summer of 2012. The wind farm was officially inaugurated and put into operation on May 11, 2015.

Electricity Generation

The wind farm generates about 1.1 terawatt-hours (TWh) of climate-friendly electricity per year, which is sufficient to power approximately 320,000 households. This electricity production helps to offset around 850,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually compared to a modern gas-fired power plant.

Infrastructure

  • Foundations: The steel foundations for the generators were supplied by Aker Verdal.
  • Power Transmission: A consortium of Siemens and Prysmian built the high-voltage direct current submarine cable connecting the wind farm to the German transmission system operated by Transpower, a subsidiary of TenneT.
  • Power Converters: Power converters were supplied by Woodward Governor Company.

Certification

The Nordsee-Ost offshore wind farm was one of the first offshore wind farms in Germany to be awarded a full project certificate. The certification was carried out according to the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency standard, covering all stages of the project development from design planning to commissioning.

Environmental Impact

The project is part of the European Union's efforts to promote reliable, environmentally friendly energy supply. It contributes significantly to reducing carbon emissions and supports Germany's renewable energy goals.

Project Team and Services

Brunel provided a key team of specialists (10-15) for the duration of the planning, engineering, transport, installation, and commissioning of the NSO Offshore Wind Farm, focusing on management and document control.

Developer and Operator

The Nordsee-Ost offshore wind farm was developed by RWE Innogy, a subsidiary of RWE, and is currently operated by RWE.
