Shantou Lemen 2
- Type: Wind Farm
- Latitude: 23.2180000
- Longitude: 117.0430000
Project Overview
- The project is developed and owned by Huaneng Power International Inc., a subsidiary of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd..
Location
- The wind farm is situated in the South China Sea, off the coast of Shantou, Guangdong Province, China.
Capacity and Turbines
- The project has a total installed capacity of 594 MW, achieved through 54 wind turbines, each with an 11-megawatt nameplate capacity. These turbines are China Huaneng-developed 11-MW direct-driven offshore turbines, marking the first use of such technology in China.
Infrastructure
- The wind farm is spread over an area of 56 square kilometers and uses fixed monopile foundations for the turbines. The turbines are interconnected by 66-kV inter-array cables.
- The project includes a 220-kilovolt offshore booster station and an onshore switching station. It also features 220-kV cables with a copper core and smooth aluminum sheath, which have the world's largest cross section.
Construction and Operation
- The construction of the project began in 2022 and it entered into commercial operation in 2024.
- The project is fully commissioned as of May 2024 and has been verified to be eligible for provincial subsidies.
Environmental Impact
- Once operational, the project is expected to generate 2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean power annually. This is equivalent to the power produced by burning about 650,000 metric tons of standard coal and results in a reduction of 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
Technological Innovations
- The project incorporates several technological advancements, including China's first 5G dual-level security network and an integrated smart sensing and monitoring system. These features make it a safe, smart, and environmentally friendly offshore wind power demonstration project.
Significance
- The Shantou Lemen 2 Offshore Wind Farm is part of the 10-million-kilowatt offshore wind power base in East Guangdong Province, a key project during China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025). It serves as a model for future offshore wind power projects and is an integral part of the region's green and low-carbon development initiatives.
