Southwest Offshore Demonstration

Location

The wind farm is situated in the Yellow Sea, off the coast of North Jeolla Province, South Korea. The specific coordinates for different phases are:

• Phase 1 (Test Site): Latitude 35° 28' 55.6", Longitude 126° 18' 31.8", at a depth of -10 meters and 12 km from the shore.
• Phase 2: Latitude 35° 30' 0", Longitude 126° 12' 0".
• Phase 3: Latitude 35° 36' 0", Longitude 126° 0' 0", at a depth of -30 meters and 40 km from the shore.

Project Details

• Capacity: The total planned capacity of the Southwest Sea Offshore Wind Farm is 2,460 MW, developed in multiple phases.
• Developer: The project is being developed by Korea Offshore Wind Power (KOWP) and Wind Minds Korea. KOWP currently owns the project with a 100% stake.

Phases of Development

Phase 1 (Test Site)

• Part 1: This phase includes 7 turbines of the Doosan Enerbility WinDS 3000/100 model, each with a 3 MW nameplate capacity, totaling 21,000 kW.
• Part 2: This phase includes 13 turbines of the Doosan Enerbility WinDS 3000/134 model, each with a 3 MW nameplate capacity, totaling 39,000 kW.

Phase 2

• This phase will consist of 80 turbines, each with a 5 MW nameplate capacity, totaling 400,000 kW. The turbine manufacturer for this phase is also expected to be Doosan Enerbility.

Phase 3

• This phase will consist of 400 turbines, with the specific turbine model and capacity not fully detailed in the available sources, but it is planned to contribute significantly to the total 2,460 MW capacity.

Contractors and Equipment

• Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC): Doosan Enerbility is responsible for the EPC services for both Phase IA and Phase IB of the project.
• Operations and Maintenance: Doosan Enerbility is also contracted to perform operations and maintenance for both Phase IA and Phase IB for a period of 15 years.

Development Status

• Construction Start: The project construction was expected to commence in 2017.

• The wind farm will be spread over an area of 378 km².

Regulatory and Policy Context

• The project aligns with South Korea's ambitious renewable energy targets, including the goal to achieve 20% of the country's energy mix from renewables by 2030, with a specific target of 16.5 GW of wind power capacity, including 14.3 GW from offshore wind.
