Vessel Description

R/V Sally Ride is a modern oceanographic research vessel operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography as part of the UNOLS academic research fleet. Named in honor of Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman to travel to space, the vessel is owned by the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research. The ship is designed to support multidisciplinary scientific research including physical oceanography, marine geology, marine biology, and atmospheric science. The vessel features approximately 2,100 square feet of laboratory space, both wet and dry labs, and is equipped to support remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and other over-the-side deployments. The ship accommodates up to 26 scientists and technicians in addition to a crew of approximately 20. Its diesel-electric DP-2 propulsion system allows for precise station-keeping during sensitive scientific operations, making it well-suited for deep-water research in open ocean environments.
