Constructed at the SIMA shipyard in Callao, she serves as the primary seamanship training platform for Peruvian Naval Academy cadets. She is named in honor of Jorge Chávez Dartnell, born in Carrasco, and continues the Peruvian Navy's tradition of maintaining a dedicated sail training ship for officer candidate education.
